Where can I get a toll tag?

Getting an electronic toll tag and opening an account is easy. To sign up or get more information, visit TxTag, EZ TAG, or TollTag.

Do I have to pay if someone else was driving my car on the toll road?

Yes. Under Texas law, the vehicle owner is responsible for any toll charges or violations, regardless of who was driving.

What happens if I don't use a prepaid toll account?

The only way to pay tolls on SH 99 is with a TxTag, EZ TAG, or TollTag. Drivers who use SH 99 without a valid toll account will receive a Notice of Toll Violation. A $5 violation fee will be added to each toll charge. Under Texas law, nonpayment of tolls is a misdemeanor offense. Drivers who fail to pay violation notices on time are subject to collection fees and court fines that can add up to $350 per violation.

The table shows how a single unpaid $1.00 toll charge can lead to substantial fees and legal action if not resolved.

Example Description Total
Unpaid Toll Toll Rate on SH 99 $1.00 $1.00
Violation Notice Violation Fee + Toll $5.00 + 1.00 $6.00
Transferred to Collections Collection Fee + Toll $25.00 + 1.00 $26.00
Transferred to Court Court Fees, Fines + Toll Up to $350.00 + 1.00 Up to $351.00

What if I sell my vehicle?

Call the customer service center for your toll account right away to deactivate your tag so your account is not linked to a vehicle you no longer own. Also, visit the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website if you need to transfer the vehicle registration to the new owner, so you are not billed for new toll charges.

Can I add a TxTag sticker to my existing TollTag/NTTA or EZ TAG/HCTRA toll account?

No. While the tags are interoperable on the roadways, different tag types may not be placed on one account. If you would like to add a tag for another vehicle to your existing account, please contact your current toll agency.

I am a TxTag, EZ TAG, or TollTag customer. Why did I get a violation notice?

1. You could receive a violation notice if your tag was not read and the license plate on file for your tag does not match the license plate on your vehicle.

2. You could receive a violation notice if the credit card information on file with your account is not up to date.

3. If you're a TxTag customer, you could receive a violation notice if you did not have enough money in your account to cover the cost of your tolls. Note: If your account balance falls below zero and your TxTag account is suspended, you will be charged a fee of $8.50 to reactivate your account.

TxTag customers should ensure that their account is registered with their name, address, and license plate number, so toll charges can be applied correctly to their account. To check that your account information is up to date, call customer service at 1-888-468-9824 (International calls: 001-512-874-9998).

Who has access to the license plate information collected through the electronic toll system?

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) understands the privacy concerns of its customers and will protect your private information. State law and TxDOT policy prohibit the sale or transfer of license plate and vehicle registration information for marketing and other unauthorized uses.
