Where are the toll roads? Who's building them?

Texas has several successful toll projects. In Houston, the most notable is the Sam Houston Parkway, operated by the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA). In Dallas, the Mountain Creek Lake Toll Bridge, President George Bush Turnpike, and Dallas North Tollway are operated by the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA). In addition, 15 international toll bridges are located along the Texas/Mexico border.

The Central Texas Turnpike Project – one of the largest ongoing construction projects in the world – will add 65 miles of new toll roads to give motorists alternatives to traffic congestion in north Austin, Round Rock, and eastern Williamson and Travis counties. The first 27 miles of new roadways, operated by the Texas Department of Transportation, opened November 2006. In addition, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) is building a 12-mile roadway through Cedar Park and Leander in western Williamson County that is expected to open in March 2007, and the CTRMA has several other Austin-area roadways in the planning stages.

In 2006, the Texas Department of Transportation also opened roads in Denton County, near Dallas (State Highway 121). These new high tech toll roads are all electronic – meaning there are no toll booths and all tolls are collected electronically. Drivers can pay using an electronic toll tag or receive a monthly bill in the mail for their toll charges. Either way, there’s no stopping or slowing down to pay tolls.

In Tyler, the first five-mile segment of Loop 49 opened in August 2006. Once fully built, Loop 49 will form a 32-mile loop around the south and west sides of Tyler, giving drivers a choice of a fast-moving, convenient way around the city and quick access to Interstate 20. The project is part of TxDOT’s efforts to provide infrastructure for economic growth and increased mobility in Smith County and the East Texas region.

The new State Highway 121 in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex also is open for business. The first seven miles of the toll road opened in July 2006, extending from FM 2281 in Carrollton south to the Denton/Dallas county line near DFW Airport. This new roadway offers drivers a much-needed option to bypass traffic in Denton County and improves access to the airport. Future stretches of State Highway 121 will provide relief from traffic congestion in fast-growing areas in Denton and Collin counties.
